Abstract

Objective To observe the influence of acupuncture intervention on the fat content and biochemical metabolism in metabolic syndrome(MS).Methods Twenty-two patients with metabolic syndrome were treated with acupuncture.Twenty-four patients were treated with Metformin as a control. Results The clinical symptoms and signs improved obviously in the two groups of MS patients, but the effect was better in the acupuncture group than in the medication group(P0.05).The changes in obesity indices and biochemical indices showed that body mass index was decreased more in the acupuncture group than in the medication group(P0.05), but fasting blood sugar was not regulated so well in the former as in the latter(P0.05).Conclusion Acupuncture intervention produces an active effect on the fat content and biochemical metabolism in metabolic syndrome but does not regulate fasting blood sugar so well as medication.
