The relation between the synthesis of deoxyribonucleic acid and the synthesis of protein in the multiplication of bacteriophage T2

Cohen & Fowler (1947) and Cohen (1948) showed that 5-methyltryptophan, which inhibits the bio- synthesis of tryptophan This paper is concemed with a further study of this relationship between the two synthetic processes. In some of the experiments, 5-methyltryptophan has been used to inhibit the synthesis of tryptophan and hence of protein. In most experiments, how- ever, bacterial mutants which require either histidine, leucine, tryptophan, tyrosine or purines for growth have been used as host cells for the bacteriophage. The primary effect of a deficiency in any of the four amino acids is expected to be the inability to synthesize proteins.
