Metal-diffused optical waveguides in LiNbO3
R. V. Schmidt, I. P. Kaminow|Applied Physics Letters|1974
Cited by 661

Deposited films of transition metals (Ti, V, and Ni) have been diffused into LiNbO3 crystals to form low-loss TE and TM mode optical waveguides. Using Ti, single-mode low-loss waveguides which confine the guided light to within ∼1 μm of the surface have been constructed. The choice of diffusion parameters allows independent control of important waveguide parameters.

Polarization in optical fibers
I. P. Kaminow|IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics|1981
Cited by 533

Recent research on fibers with very small or very large birefringence for polarization-dependent applications is reviewed. The nature of random coupling between normal modes of polarization is analyzed and discussed in connection with various applications.

Optical waveguiding layers in LiNbO3 and LiTaO3
I. P. Kaminow, J. R. Carruthers|Applied Physics Letters|1973
Cited by 322

Positive refractive-index layers in LiNbO3 and LiTaO3 have been produced by a novel out-diffusion technique. The index profiles for a variety of conditions are measured directly with an interference microscope. Low-loss optical waveguiding on the surface of these crystals has been observed.
