A phenome-wide association and Mendelian Randomisation study of polygenic risk for depression in UK BiobankXueyi Shen, David M. Howard, Mark J. Adams et al.|Nature Communications|2020 Abstract Depression is a leading cause of worldwide disability but there remains considerable uncertainty regarding its neural and behavioural associations. Here, using non-overlapping Psychiatric Genomics Consortium (PGC) datasets as a reference, we estimate polygenic risk scores for depression (depression-PRS) in a discovery ( N = 10,674) and replication ( N = 11,214) imaging sample from UK Biobank. We report 77 traits that are significantly associated with depression-PRS, in both discovery and replication analyses. Mendelian Randomisation analysis supports a potential causal effect of liability to depression on brain white matter microstructure ( β : 0.125 to 0.868, p FDR < 0.043). Several behavioural traits are also associated with depression-PRS ( β : 0.014 to 0.180, p FDR : 0.049 to 1.28 × 10 −14 ) and we find a significant and positive interaction between depression-PRS and adverse environmental exposures on mental health outcomes. This study reveals replicable associations between depression-PRS and white matter microstructure. Our results indicate that white matter microstructure differences may be a causal consequence of liability to depression.
A short review of medical-grade stainless steel: Corrosion resistance and novel techniquesYihan Xu, Yihan Li, Tianyan Chen et al.|Journal of Materials Research and Technology|2024 Due to its exceptional quality as a biomedical metal, stainless steel is often utilized to produce a broad range of medical tools. The resistance of stainless steel to corrosion is a key indicator of how long and how effective it will serve its intended purpose, and it is an important factor in determining the biocompatibility of the material. However, due to the complex physiological environment within the human body, the corrosion management of medical-grade stainless steel is facing several challenges. In this article, an overview of the factors that influence the corrosion performance of medical-grade stainless steel is provided, and new technologies and methods that have been developed in recent years to improve the corrosion resistance are discussed. These cutting-edge methods are expected to improve the corrosion resistance and longevity of medical-grade stainless steel, providing strong support for the increased applicability of the material in the medical industry.
Multipath video transport over ad hoc networksShiwen Mao, Shunan Lin, Yao Wang et al.|IEEE Wireless Communications|2005 Real-time multimedia transport has stringent bandwidth, delay, and loss requirements. It is a great challenge to support such applications in wireless ad hoc networks, which are characterized by frequent link failures and congestion. Using multiple paths in parallel for a real-time multimedia session (called multipath transport) provides a new degree of freedom in designing robust multimedia transport systems. In this article, we describe a framework for multipath video transport over wireless ad hoc networks, and examine its essential components, including multistream video coding, multipath routing, and transport mechanisms. We illustrate by three representative examples how to extend existing video coding schemes in order to fully explore the potential of multipath transport. We also examine important mechanisms in different layers for supporting multipath video transport over ad hoc networks. Our experiments show that multipath transport is a promising technique for efficient video communications over ad hoc networks.
