Firing temperature and firing time influence on mechanical and physical properties of clay bricks

The effects of firing time and temperature on compressive strength, water absorption, bending strength, weight loss, firing shrinkage and densities of clay bricks were determined. For a given clay and method of manufacture, higher compressive and bending strengths, higher density and lower absorptions are associated with higher firing temperatures. Increasing firing time only slightly altered the mechanical and physical properties of clay bricks. However, firing temperature significantly affected the physical properties. The results suggested that firing temperature was the key factor to modulate the physical properties in clay bricks. However, the effect of firing time was not significant. The results obtained in this study can only be compared to the properties of bricks produced under similar conditions with similar raw materials.

Response of lettuce ( <i>Lactuca sativa</i> var. <i>crispa</i> ) to salinity of irrigation water

Abstract This study was conducted in a greenhouse to assess the response of lettuce ( Lactuca sativa var. crispa ) to increasing salinity of irrigation water (0.75, 1.5, 2.5, 3.5, 5.0, and 7.0 dS m −1 ). Soil salinity increased linearly with increasing salinity of irrigation water. The threshold value was determined as 1.1 dS m −1 and the relative yield decrease in slope after this threshold as 9.3%. The results showed that L. sativa var. crispa was moderately sensitive to salinity. In contrast to yield, plant dry matter content increased with increasing salinity for the salinity range studied. The taste of lettuce was not affected by salinity. The results further showed that the variables of leaf number per plant, plant height, water use efficiency, and accumulation of calcium (Ca) and iron (Fe) in the leaves decreased with salinity, whereas accumulation of potassium (K), nitrogen (N), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), and zinc (Zn) in plant leaves was unaffected.

Lisansüstü eğitim; eğitim kalitesi, ülke kaynaklarının etkin kullanımı ve gelişmişlik düzeyi ile yakından ilişkili olduğu için önemle üzerinde durulması gereken bir konudur. Türkiye’de, lisansüstü eğitimde öğretim üyesi, öğrenci, eğitim programları ve çalışma birimleri ve şartlarıyla ilgili pek çok sorun yaşanmaktadır. Bu çalışma; esas itibariyle lisansüstü eğitimin önemini vurgulayarak, söz konusu bu sorunları genel boyutuyla tespit edebilmeyi ve geliştirilebilecek çözüm önerilerine katkı sağlayabilmeyi amaçlamaktadır
