Abstract

Maleic acid (MA) and AlCl<sub>3</sub> self-assemble into catalytic complexes (Al–(MA)<sub>2</sub>–(OH)<sub>2</sub>(aq)) with improved selectivity for converting glucose to HMF, and levulinic acid.
