Low T 3-autonomous disease or phenomenon of critical illness?

Abstract

Background: Reduced serum T 3 without increased TSH secretion especially associated to critical illness has been described as "Low T 3 syndrome". It still remains unclear whether "Low T 3" represents a autonomous disease or a phenomenon of critical illness as a damaging maladaptive response.
