Cystosarcoma phyllodes of the breast: A malignant and a benign tumor. A clinicopathological study of seventy-seven cases

Abstract

and established cystosarcoma pliyllodcs of the breast as an entity, emphasized its benign nature. Since then, although the literature concerning this type of tumor has been voluminous, most articles have been reports of single or only a few cases, and conclusions regarding its nature and behavior have been derived largely from periodic analysis of the previously published case reports of others. Thus, in 1931, Lee and Pack collected10, 105 cases from the literature and reported six cases of thcir own. From analysis of this material, thesc authors described several characteristic features, among which were: greatness in s i x ; cncaps~ilation with noninvasion ol thc breast; developiiient horn prc-cxisten t fibroadcnomas; long initial period of quiescence oi- slow growth followed by sudden rapid accelcration; possible importance of lactation aiid nursing difficulties in the mctainorphosis of simple fibroadenoma to cystosarcoma; intracystic p o l y p i d excrescences; Inyxoiiiatous
