This document provides guidance on how the NIST Biometric Image Software (NBIS) nonexport controlled packages are installed and executed.Its content and format is one of user's guide and reference manual.Some algorithmic overview is provided, but more details can be found in the cited references.The Table of Contents provides the reader a map into the document, and the hyperlinks in the electronic version enable the reader to effectively navigate the document and locate desired information.These hyperlinks are unavailable when using a paper copy of the document.

In September 2017, the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA) held a data collection as part of its Nail to Nail (N2N) Fingerprint Challenge Participating Challengers deployed devices designed to collect an image of the full nail to nail surface area of a fingerprint-equivalent to a rolled fingerprint-from an unacclimated user, without assistance from a trained operator. Traditional operator-assisted live-scan rolled fingerprints were also captured, along with assorted other friction ridge live-scan and latent captures. The collection of images collected during the N2N Fingerprint Challenge, entitled Special Database 302 (SD 302), can be freely downloaded from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) website.

A new collection of legacy inked rolled and plain fingerprint card scans are being released to the public. The cards were scanned at three resolutions in the 8-bit grayscale color space. The data is available as lossless images, and can be freely downloaded on the National Institute of Standards and Technology's website.
